A fine house with a few problems:
The substantial Edwardian House had a poor relationship with it's garden. An oversized ‘period’ lean-to conservatory overheated in summer and chilled in winter, blocking access and views from the house to the garden.
The exposed hilltop garden was bounded by a high wall to the north-west that blocked the wind but also a spectacular panorama across open countryside to the sunset. Despite the generous proportions of the house, there were no rooms large enough for the growing family to enjoy together.
The solution was to partially demolish the old back rooms and the conservatory to reconnect the house and garden, creating a new straight view and connection between the house and extension. A generous new family room was designed to define spaces for cooking, eating, playing and reading. This space connects the house with the garden, but focusses on a new external glass bay window overlooking the panoramic sunset.
