We were appointed by Filwood Playing Fields Trust in January 2003 through a competitive interview. As lead consultants of a multi-disciplinary design team we developed the brief and design proposals with the Trust, the National Playing Fields Association, Football Foundation, Bristol City Council, the local players and residents of Knowle West.
An open evening of consultation about the Playing Fields and Filwood Park was held with residents to foster a positive dialogue and look beyond the immediate requirements of the football teams to find an inclusive strategy for the whole community. The evening took the form of mapping exercises. Residents were encouraged to identify how they used the playing fields and park, places where there were opportunities or where current problems needed to be addressed.
The existing football changing facilities were subject to frequent attacks and vandalism. The need for secure, vandal-free play space and equipment for younger children was voiced by several parents. We prepared a report proposing a masterplan for the development of the Park and Playing Fields which would improve facilities for the residents and players alike.
The completed building houses changing facilities for 8 teams and 4 match officials teams, with social rooms, offices and a first floor Club-room which will help to pay for the upkeep of the grounds. The building was completed within a fixed budget of £690,000.
