Featured in "Bristol's Twentieth-Century Buildings" by Tony Aldous, The Ecohome is a competition winning demonstration house of sustainable methods of building and running a home, a public exhibition by Bristol City Council to promote ecological issues as part of the CREATE Centre.
The fully functional 3 bedroom house is not a prototype for future housing but an exhibition of aspects of sustainability both in new and existing houses from conservation of natural and non-renewable resources to adaptability for the changing needs of the family. Nevertheless, aspects of the house construction, which was novel at the time, have been taken up by the wider construction industry. The Ecohome, completed in 1997, has withstood the test of time, demonstrating that the principles it embodies are as relevant today as when the exhibition first opened.
The house and garden have become a much loved meeting place for a thriving group of volunteers who manage the house and tend the garden.
